Coke Cans

Here is a standard  12 x 16 = 48 can coke box.

Can it be repackaged to fit more cans in the box?

We choose units so that the cans have radius 1.

I throw the problem out to the class. I put them in small groups at the whiteboards. At the beginning there is a large variety of strategies; a few seem a bit crazy. But soon a dominant strategy emerges…
